Speaker: Dr Jon Lovelady | Series: 3 Words for 2108: Relationships, Relevance and Rigor

Happy New Year!! 2018 is off to a grand start! We will begin the year with the sermon series “3 Words for 2108: Relationships, Relevance and Rigor.” Years ago someone coined the phrase “emotional quotient” or “emotional intelligence.”  It is the ability to: discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s). Rather than “EI” (emotional intelligence) we need greater “SI” (Spiritual Intelligence). Relationships certainly should come first in this list of these three words because relationships give substance and meaning to our lives. The quality of our relationships can determine our overall sense of joy and happiness.  As you start 2018, what relationships will truly make a difference? When we strengthen our Spiritual Intelligence or our relationship with God, then it will have impact upon all our relationships. In Philippians 2:12-18 Paul is seeking to move the Philippians to a higher level of understanding spiritual realities. Theone statement seems to be outrageous in this scripture is “Do everything without grumbling or arguing” but is this possible? It is not possible just through our energy and effort!  Instead this passage gives us “spiritual intelligence” that will help us toward this goal!  As you prepare for worship, allow these words to encourage you to grow in faith in 2018. Philippians 2:12-18: Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence– continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly tothe word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.  But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
