How to have a submissive wife and other tall tales!
Speaker: Dr Jon Lovelady | Series: How to have a submissive wife and other tall tales!
Our after-Easter series will be focused on relationships, especially the marriage relationship. The title of this series is: “How to have a submissive wife and other tall tales!” This is a fun but meaningful look at Ephesians 5 in order to gain God’s understanding of being submissive. Unfortunately, men and women in the first century would have read Ephesians 5 as a departure from the norm of their society, and it would have presented a challenge to the early Christians to live differently in all of their relationships. As we look at this scripture, we have to ask ourselves several simple questions: What does it mean to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ?; What does it mean for a wife to submit to her husband in the same manner as the church submits to Christ?; What does it mean for a husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it? We now read this passage through the idea of seeking to dominate one another, rather than mutually submitting to Jesus Christ. This week we will use Ephesians 5:15-25 to better understand the power and meaning of mutual submission to one another! As you read these words, how do they challenge you to submit your life to Jesus Christ? Ephesians 5:15-25: Be very careful, then, how you live– not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (NIV)
